What class do you teach?

FIT on Tuesday and Thursday at 4pm

What inspired you to become a fitness instructor?

I went to a Body Pump demo and really liked what I saw. I also thought it would be cool to be able to help people achieve their fitness goals.

What motivates you to stay healthy and fit?

I play club rugby here and that is one of my major motivations for working out and staying in shape.

What is your favorite workout at the moment?

I really enjoy working out on the row machines here at Fike.

What is your advice for someone looking to begin their fitness journey of getting into shape and eating healthy?

Start slow. Don’t try and go all out the first time you start to workout or eat healthy because you might burn yourself out. Allow yourself to ease into it.

What are you usually doing on a Friday night?

Normally playing in one of our rugby matches.

 What are your hobbies?

Playing Rugby or hanging out with the roommates watching Netflix.

What do you see yourself doing in 5-10 years from now?

Hopefully still working in the fitness industry in someway.

What class do you teach?

Deep Water Fitness

What inspired you to become a fitness instructor?
I really enjoy working out especially if it involves something fun such as water. I figured that I was at Fike all the time anyways might as well get paid for it! Also, the class was not going to be possible if someone did not step up and take over and I did not want that to happen so I volunteered.

What motivates you to stay healthy and fit?
Myself. I feel good about myself when I stay active and eat right not only emotionally but physically. I am happier and more satisfied in life when I live that way.
What is your favorite workout at the moment?
I don’t know if I would call it my favorite because for me I do not really have one but I have really been focusing on my running. I am not a good runner but I know that it is good for you so i have been using this program Couch to 5k that I absolutely love. Since I was already really active the beginning was pretty easy for me but its great in helping you build up distance and time of running.
What is your advice for someone looking to begin their fitness journey of getting into shape and eating healthy?
It takes time so be patient with yourself. You are not going to see results right away so you have to stick to. You have to be doing this for yourself or you will not keep up with it so find what keeps you motivated and you have fun with. Take it from me, do not quit because once you start back it makes it ten times harder to get to where you want to be.
What are you usually doing on a Friday night?
I am usually hanging out with my boyfriend or family. I really love being around people and doing something fun with the people I love. I am also an only child so family is really important to me.
What are your hobbies?
My biggest hobby would probably be scuba diving. I have been doing it since I was about 14 and love it! If it has anything to do with the ocean or the beach I am there!

What do you see yourself doing in 5-10 years from now?
Hopefully living one of my long time dreams which is working in country music. I would love to be in Nashville managing/marketing country artists. If not Nashville then definitely Charleston.

Fitness Leadership

Interested in becoming a Fitness Instructor here at Fike? We have the perfect class for you!

Fitness Leadership will give you all of the tools you will need to become a successful Fitness Instructor. Half the class is composed of vital information to become an instructor. The other half of class you get to sample out all of the fitness classes we offer by having our instructors come in and teach a class for you! You also get matched up with an instructor, and shadow them to gain experience teaching. Here are tidbits of some students who are currently taking the class:

Fitness Leadership this semester has boosted my confidence and  created an improvement in my form when I’m working out. You meet a lot of great people interested in improving the wellness of their peers and anyone else who enters the gym and gives you a great opportunity to get a first person view of each group fitness class Fike has to offer. I signed up for this course because I love to dance and workout and I thoroughly enjoy helping others. I would advise anyone who is interested in becoming a fitness instructor or just to gain more knowledge in group fitness to sign up for this class. You learn a lot and have so much fun!

I decided to take this class because it sounded like something new and fun also I was interested in possibly teaching a fitness class and wanted to see what that entailed. The actual fitness leadership class was great. We met every Friday for two hours and talked about how our shadowing was going, a long with taking a different fitness class every week. Some classes I liked some not so much but I was exposed to many new types of workouts and it gave me a better understanding of classes I would want to teach. I decided to co instruct the FIT class with Casey which I also went to once a week. At first I was hesitant to put the microphone on and get up in front of a class, but we take it step by step only doing small bits at a time each week so it is really not that bad. If you like working out and are able to get up in front of a group then this is the class for you. I highly recommend it.

Massage Therapy

We are over half way through the semester and before we know it, final exams will be creeping up on us. Time flies before you know it, and it can be very stressful and overwhelming. Muscle tension is a condition which muscles in the body remain semi contracted for an extended period of time. Massages are extremely beneficial in reducing stress, pain, and muscle tension. This semester is flying by, and with our lives being at such a fast pace, the small stressors in our everyday lives build up and can become extremely detrimental to our heath. Sometimes you just need to slow down for a little bit and give your body a break. There is no better way to do this than to get a massage. Here at Fike, we have two wonderful massage therapists: Lisa Hughes, and Bonnie Barrow.

Lisa is a South Carolina licensed massage therapist and graduated from the Massage Therapy Program at Greenville Technical College. Lisa has gained certification and experience in Sports Massage through the Sports Massage program at Greenville Tech. Lisa has been working at Fike since February 2013 and her mission as a massage therapist is to facilitate the wholeness of mind, body and spirit to people of all ages and health backgrounds seeking healing through massage therapy.

Bonnie is a SC and NC Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist.  Her approach to healing is based on the belief that every body has the capacity to self-heal and that her role is to assist this innate ability in others.  Bonnie is trained in several massage modalities including: Swedish massage, Deep Tissue / Myofascial massage, Hot Stone massage, Hydrotherapy, and Sports massage.  She holds a BA in English from Appalachian State University and a 650 hour diploma in Massage Therapy from the Body Therapy Institute. Bonnie has been offering massage therapy here at Fike since she moved here in 2011.

We offer 30, 60 and 90 minute sessions at Fike as well as 30 and 60 minute packages. Hot stone massages are also offered. Massage therapy is available for students, employees, alumni, Fike members and community members, and we have great student rates!

What class do you teach?
Cycling

What inspired you to become a fitness instructor?
I have always been involved with sports so it was a natural transition to get involved into fitness.

What motivates you to stay healthy and fit?
Living a long and healthy life drives me to stay fit.

What is your favorite workout at the moment?
My two favorite workouts are the strong lifts program by Mehdi and routines that are based on the CrossFit movement.

What is your advice for someone looking to begin their fitness journey of getting into shape and eating healthy?
My advice would be to be patient. The journey is a long one, but it’s well worth the wait. Eating healthy should be the prime focus; exercising is very important, but it should be secondary to incorporating  a healthy diet.

What are you usually doing on a Friday night?
I am usually watching HGTV on Friday nights. What can I say, it’s my favorite channel.

What are your hobbies?
I am a graduate student which does not afford me much time for hobbies. However, I am a big time gamer, so playing the call of duty brands on my console is what I usually do for fun

What do you see yourself doing in 5-10 years from now?
I see myself crunching numbers during the week for a data analyst company while teaching fitness classes during the weekends. Being involved in fitness is something that will always be a part of me so I cannot fathom the idea of not doing it in the future.

Want a Change of Pace in your Workout? Try Aquatic Fitness!

If you’re feeling good about your workouts and would like a new routine, try aquatic fitness! Not only is it a ton of fun, but it offers many benefits that land fitness doesn’t offer. Aquatic fitness allows you to work every muscle and every joint at the same time. Water is also 829 times denser than air, allowing for greater resistance, with a lower risk of injury than exercising on land. Another great benefit of aquatic fitness is the temperature of the water is constantly cooling off your body while you are exercising, allowing you to work hard and not overheat. Anyone at any age can participate in an aquatic fitness class and still get an awesome workout. The water causes your body to be buoyant causing minimum strain and maximum workout. Here at Fike, we offer three different aquatic fitness classes during the week; Aqua Groove, Deep Water Fitness, and 30/30.

Below are descriptions from our awesome instructors who teach these classes:

Aqua Groove:

Check out this new twist on water! We now offer an Aqua Groove class. This class consists of splashing, clapping, dancing, exercising and LOTS of laughter! The class involves intertwining dance and exercise moves to give you a medium impact workout. Because we are dancing, on some days we’ll spice up the class with props such as hats or clappers. When there’s a need for a tougher workout we’ll even include weights. If you are skeptical about whether or not you’ll actually get a workout in the water , I DARE you to come! So come shake your rump and splash your way into shape!

Aqua Groove is taught by Quaya on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 AM

Deep Water Fitness:

Deep Water Fitness is an intense aquatic workout in the diving tank. The workout focuses mostly on cardio while adding in muscle workouts with weights, noodles, kick boards, and gloves. We hit every muscle in the body such as legs, abs, arms, shoulders, etc. while performing some sort of cardio. Treading water is equivalent to running but so much more fun! You can burn 11 calories while treading water per minute, so that means that you can burn more than 500 calories and tone muscles with this fun 45 minute workout.
Deep Water Fitness is taught by Michaela, who is a certified lifeguard and very experienced in water and with fitness on Friday morning’s at 7:45 AM.

30/30:

30/30 is a great class for entry-level up to advanced swimmers! We talk about and apply swimming techniques and injury prevention while pursuing a specific focus every day- whether it’s a distance, technique, or individual stroke. The class is aimed to create more comfortable and faster swimmers. The second half of the class is strength on Mondays and either a run or stationary bike on Wednesdays. It’s an informal class where discussion is encouraged because swimming is not a listen and do it exercise, so come out and meet new people and get into a new exercise with people who love the sport!

30/30 is taught by Carl, a certified USA Swimming and USA Triathlon coach who has also qualified for the USA Triathlon World Championships and Team USA.  This class is taught on Mondays and Wednesdays at 3:00 PM!

All Aquatic Fitness classes meet in the Lap Pool (Deep Water Fitness meets in the dive tank). Be sure to bring a towel, water and be prepared for a great workout!

What class do you teach?

Cycling

What inspired you to become a fitness instructor?

In middle and high school, I used to go to Spinning classes with my mom. I fell in love with with the workout, the motivation it gave me and how I felt after taking a class. I thought about how awesome it would be to get certified and share my passion for cycling with other people, while putting my own spin on it. I teach many 6 am classes and I am blown away with the insane amount of dedication people have to wake up early to exercise. I love it!

What motivates you to stay healthy and fit?

Getting in a a good workout helps me get into a good routine for the day and helps me conquer all of the stressful work that gets thrown on me from classes. My workout is a time where I can put my headphones in, zone out the rest of the world and have time for myself. I think it is extremely important for everyone to have that time for themselves. I always love how I feel after a workout which keeps me motivated to workout frequently.

What is your favorite workout at the moment?

I have recently gotten into weight lifting and love High Intensity Interval Training. The intervals shoot my heart rate up and really allow me to push myself, and I love the burn afterwards!

What is your advice for someone looking to begin their fitness journey of getting into shape and eating healthy?

Go at your own pace! Fitness is not a competition, it is a journey. If you don’t know where to start, try a fitness class. The instructors are there to help you. Don’t be scared to ask questions, we are there to help. Don’t give up!

What are you usually doing on a Friday night?

I am either out with friends, or kicking back on the couch watching a good movie.

What are your hobbies?

I love being active! Snowboarding, hiking, going to the gym, hanging out with friends, kickboxing, and traveling.

What do you see yourself doing in 5-10 years from now?

I would LOVE to stay in the fitness and wellness field. As a nutrition major, I am hoping to go on and become a Registered Dietitian. I would love to integrate my fitness classes and my nutritional experience together and provide nutritional counseling at a fitness and wellness center.
